HMW for lesson on 4.12.14.

Task 2.

what choices you made with your group to make one of these articles into an East End Tale? Why? We made one of the characters be a narrator, because in EET there is always a person who telling the story of the tale.

How did you make the new tale you created like the tales in the play? We used a bit of rhyme.

Which character did you play and how? I played the person who beats up the guy for being black. I used physical theatre to show I was beating him.

What theatre skills did you use to  perform the tale? physical theatre.

Task 3.

How did you bring the location of your tale to life with sound and movement? Used sounds you would hear in a supermarket.

How did you communicate the characters? with body language.

How did you use the text of EET in this work? We only used some words like "kerr- ching"

27th Nov -

 TALE 8
What was effective about the sounds they had decided to use?
They used all features of their bodies e.g mouth, hands, to create a piece which really sounded like a storm.
What was effective about the movement they had decided to use?
They moved their bodies as though the type of weather would, e.g for lightning their movement was fast and dynamic.
How did the work make you feel?
It made me feel like I was really in a storm.
What could have been developed further?
To combine their movement and sounds.
Do the sounds and movement have the same impact as just reading out the lines? Is it a better way to help tell this story?
No, because its way more interesting if they put an action with a word or a body movement it makes you feel and understand what their saying more.

TALE 6

  • What scene did you develop? - 1
  • What drama skills did you use to do so? - physical theatre to show his dad beating him
  • Explain what you did as your character. Why did you make these choices? (Think about character- voice/physicality.)- I played the teacher and so I had a kindness towards him as I knew he was a bright, kind boy.

  • What was effective about the characters they had decided to explore? They all had a problem that they have either faced or are facing.
  • Did the scene help you understand anything new about the play or another character?- it helped me to understand that the characters all have hidden problems that are explored during the play.

play, characters, and themes-20th November

Over the last few lessons, I have learnt that the play is full of possible real life tragedies and situations. Some of the tales are more obvious than others, for example the tale of the girl working in the shop, that tale clearly shows that the man was racist to her, but in the tales about the man who murdered someone or the women who was abused they weren't so clear to understand. You had to use your common sense and knowledge to get what was going on, what I like about these tales is that they make you think and actually get you more involved and interested in the play.

The characters are all very interesting I like how they are all different and each have their own story but live in the same place. I particularly like the characters that you don't know about their back story, I think its fun to make up what you think happened to them and why they are like they are. In my scene I like the character of the rude man, I think we could do a lot of background work on him as to why he is like he is.

The themes of the play are all very serious but are all possible situations which probably someone in the class has had to deal with. I find it interesting that the stories they have chosen relate to the stereotypical idea of the East end (where it is set). I think it is clever how they have interpreted that idea of the East End into many different tales of peoples lives. It is also scary though, to think that all the tales have actually happened to many many people all over the world, and so when I perform in the play I want to make sure I am respectful to people watching who may have a sentimental connection to the character or scene.

Task 3

  • What scene did you develop? - we developed East End Tales 1
  • What drama skills did you use to do so?- Improvisation, understanding of character, detailed facts, clear pronunciation and team work.
  • Explain what you did as a group. Why did you make these choices? (Think about character- voice/physicality.) -we decided to make up a past of the character and show clearly and detailed what happened to him and why he is like what he is. We made sensible conclusions as to what happened, by using guidance from the script and general knowledge of things we know that relate to what was said in the script. We did this to get a better understanding of the character and show the class more of the characters personality.
  • What was effective about the characterisation they had decided to explore?- I liked how some groups used sound to show emotions of the character and others used actions, it made the scene much more interesting to watch.
  • Did the scene help you understand anything new about the play or another character?- It helped me understand that the play is all about interpretations of the East End. It also helped me understand that what the play talks about is very serious issues about possibly true stories of peoples lives.

Lesson 2

So far with the play East End Tales, I have found it quite confusing. It is very complicated but at the same time really interesting. I think whats complicated about it is how its written in the fact that I dont really understand who is talking.

I do really like the play, I love how it rhymes and I think we can really do something with the piece. The challenges in making it work though will be:

  • making the whole class understand and get involved
  • everyone coming to a agreement in what to do for the scenes
  • thinking outside the box, trying to make it look good
  • trying new techniques into using our bodies to show characters
  • following  instructions
  • focusing
My questions would be:

  • how can we make the seen look effective and interesting?
  • what does the character feel in the scene?
  • what looks good on stage?
  • how can we get the whole class involved

East End Facts

1. Jack the Ripper came from the East End

2.Victoria Park (known colloquially as Vicky Park or the People's Park) opened in 1845. It stretches out across part of the East End of London.

3.  East London and was considered to include all of Greater London east of the City of London and north of the River Thames.

4. Famous for the The Blitz during WW2 because was one of the most bombed places in London.

5. East London has always been the poor relation of the West End. From the earliest times, it attracted trade and industry, thanks to its proximity to both The Thames and the River Lea. In particular, ‘dirty’ industries like tanning and tallow works clustered in the east, downwind and outside the city walls where ‘noxious’ trades were banned.
